Fire & Explosion at OxyChem Plant in Texas

A fire at the OxyChem Chemical Plant in Ingleside, Texas led to an explosion on Thursday, January 27. OxyChem’s on-site response team was able to contain the blaze, but the investigation into the cause of the incident has just begun.

The Texas Committee on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is taking part in the investigation, first focusing on assisting local emergency crews and officials with any necessary immediate response. They will be working alongside OxyChem to monitor air quality to determine the risk presented by any possible vapors that may have escaped following the incident. The specific chemical involved in the fire and explosion has not been confirmed.

No injuries have been reported, but the damage inflicted by plant explosions is not always physical. Workers at the plant, alongside those at the neighboring facility, the Chemours Ingleside Plant, sheltered in place following the explosion as a precaution. The communities surrounding the plants were not immediately affected.
